2021 CAA Basketball Travel Tryout Guide

The intent of this guide is to provide information regarding what to expect before, during and after tryouts.

Before Tryouts

Registration

  • Registration deadline is September 5, 2021.
  • Walk-up registrations will not be accepted.

Dates

  • Boys Travel Tryouts will be held on 9/19 and 9/26.
  • Girls Travel Tryouts will be held on 9/19, 9/25 and 9/27.
  • The session for each grade will last 90 minutes and players are expected to attend both sessions.

What To Expect

  • Players will be run through a variety of basketball drills along with scrimmages.
  • Scrimmages may include 2:2, 3:3, 4:4 and 5:5 game play.
  • Chanhassen High School basketball coaches will be used to evaluate players at tryouts and all final decisions rest with the varsity coach and staff.
  • A small number of CAA board members will also help to facilitate the process, but will not be present while their child participates.
  • The goal is to place players based on ability, attitude and athleticism in a competitive and fair environment.
  • Depending on number or registrants at each grade level, there will likely be cuts.  Players who are not placed on a team are encouraged to participate in our Community Program.
  • Tryout can be a stressful time for players and parents.  Please encourage your players to work hard, stay relaxed and have fun during the process.

Injury/Illness Policy

  • If a player is unable to participate due to illness or injury the parent of the player must contact the Travel Director prior to the first tryout session.
  • Players who are unable to participate will be excused.  Team placement will then be determined on a case-by-case basis.  Factors generally will include past season’s coach evaluation, performance of players that were evaluated similarly last year and general knowledge of the player’s ability through camps and open gyms.

During Tryouts

Tryout Day

  • Players should arrive 20 minutes prior to their scheduled time to check in and receive a numbered pinnie.
  • Players should wear shorts, t-shirt and basketball shoes.
  • Players should not wear a uniform from a previous season.
  • Players will be allowed time to warm up prior to tryouts.
  • Tryouts are closed to parents and other spectators.  Thank you for your cooperation with this policy.

Player Evaluation

  • Players will be assessed on a number of factors such as ball-handling, court vision, decision making, shooting/scoring, off ball movement, defense and rebounding.
  • Intangibles like effort and attitude are also assessed.
  • Players will also be divided into groups for scrimmaging so evaluators can see how they perform in a game like setting.

After Tryouts

Team Formation

  • The high school staff will form teams after the second tryout session.  Primary emphasis will be based on performance at tryouts this fall.  However, coach evaluations from the previous season are also taken into consideration as teams are formed.
  • Number of teams is dependent on each grade.
  • Teams will have 8-10 players.

Roster Communication

  • Team rosters will be posted on the CAA Basketball website on 10/1.
  • Coaches will be assigned shortly after team formation.

Questions or Concerns

  • Questions or concerns should be directed to the Travel Program Director.
  • We appreciate that the outcome of a tryout process may not be what a player or parent hoped for, but we make the best effort to put each player in an environment we believe they can have the most success and most fun.
  • If you are disappointed with the outcome, we request that you please wait 24 hours before contacting the Travel Director.

What If My Player Is Not Placed On A Travel Team?

Players who are not placed on a team are encouraged to participate in our Community Basketball Program.  If the player decides to participate in this program the difference in the fess will be refunded to the family and the player automatically enrolled into Community Basketball.

Uniform Sizing Schedule

Uniform sizing will be available at Chanhassen High School during the following times:

Sunday, Sept. 19th - 7:00am-7:00pm
Monday, Sept. 20th - 4:00pm-8:00pm

Please be sure to stop by the high school during these times to submit your uniform sizes.

Financial Aid

In keeping with the mission statement of CAA, scholarships are available to families that need to defray the cost of registration fees. We ask, however, that families requesting scholarship assistance consider what portion, if any, of the registration fee they are able to pay. CAA wants all youth who wish to participate in sports to have the opportunity to do so. The CAA Board does not want a family’s financial status to prohibit participation.

For more information, contact Molly Thomas prior to registering.
